Cybersecurity - Device Management

What Can You Do To Protect Your Devices?

Our computers and mobile devices are the gateway to the financial world.  They can make life more convenient and give you greater flexibility.   But, you must create "large walls" to keep bad actors out of your finances and identity.

Device management considerations:

  • Update all software on all devices.
  • Keep operating systems updated regularly.
  • Set auto-update for programs that allow it.
  • Run antivirus software.
  • Install a virtual private network (VPN) program on your computer and mobile devices for safe use of free wi-fi networks.
  • Change your home's internet router's default username and password - do not keep the factory settings.
  • Select the WPA2 or WPA3 encryption setting on your router.
  • Keep the router's firmware updated.
  • Back up your data on all your devices.   Consider an online cloud storage system (e.g., Dropbox, Box, iCloud, etc.).
  • On your mobile phone, use a password to access the phone, if your device allows, an electronic SIM card is preferred, do NOT store passwords on your phone and talk to your cell phone carrier to discuss other measures they can use to protect your account.
