Cybersecurity - Taxes

If the old saying, “there are two certainties in life…death and taxes” wasn’t bad enough, now you can have your tax return hijacked.

Tax Considerations:

  • Cyber thieves attempt to file false tax returns under your name and Social Security number.   The use false income and tax information and have a fictitious tax refund sent to a bank they control.   When you go to electronically file your real tax return, the IRS will alert that a return has already been files.
  • The IRS offers a PIN that is required to file a tax return.  Only the filer with the PIN can submit the return.
  • Apply with the IRS for an identity protection PIN.
